What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do ("Way of the Open Hand") is a classical martial art which integrates the graceful movements of Northern & Southern Chinese martial arts, with the sharper techniques of Japanese and Okinawan karate blended with centuries old Korean Soo Bahk ("Hand Strike") and Tae Kyun ("Foot Style"). Tang Soo Do places emphasis on the complete development of hand and foot techniques. The Okinawan influences were primarily a result of the Japanese occupation of Korean from 1910 to 1945. Our kicking techniques, for which Tang Soo Do is recognized are based on the ancient Korean kicking style of Tae Kyun which were later formalized by Grand Master Hwang Kee founder of the Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do style. Tang Soo Do is both a hard and soft style, deriving its hardness in part from Soo Bahk and Okinawan Te and its soft flowing movements from the Northern and Southern Chinese systems.
